"Welcome to the new Facebook" began in 2007/2008 as an excercise in simple portraiture, using facebook as the ultimate source of faces. There were limits: one chance only to capture the expression with no touch ups using india ink markers on canvas, and only their profile pictures as sources (only images they used to represent themselves).
As my collection progressed, I thought it necessary to determine what rights I had to the photos as sources and I searched through facebook's 'read me' section to discover there were no rights. For anyone. By agreeing to be my Facebook Friend, everyone had by extention allowed me to use their images. Any images I (or you, or your grandmother) posted would be the property of Facebook, for profit or otherwise, regardless account deletion.
Since then, the privacy rights of users (or lack thereof) has come under fire and public pressure has pursuaded Facebook to amend their rules.
My collection of faces numbered over 130 by May of 2008, and I exhibited them in small groups and lines in the GoSA Gallery at the University of Manitoba, Gallery 111, Degrees Diner, Ace Art (PDF 2008), cre8ery ( After School Special, auxiliary gallery).
